I haven't played chess in years, and was never very good, but...
Here's a cool video of some grandmasters playing "speed chess":

Speed chess may be interesting for some folks, but I would lament that it is over way too soon. I Think it's important to slow down and take time to consider and savor savor each move.
According to Wikipedia, an average game of chess lasts up to an hour. And a tournament game can last 7 hours. I think you have to be very good (great) to savor a 7 hour game. The advantage of hour-long games (I would guess) is that you can rest for a bit, then play another game.
I would think an hour would be more than enough time to satisfy anyone's love of playing chess, especially if it were intimated that a second game may in the offing.
Let's play a game of backgammon first (5 to 30 minutes). Then, chess.
"Variety is the spice of life" as the cliche says.
