Review: Western Cafe

I had breakfast here last Friday - eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, and toast. The sausage patty was ginormous - the size of a small steak. I was so full I had to skip getting a sweetroll for dessert.

I liked the Western Cafe a bit better than Mainstreet Overeasy. I won't be eating at either one very frequently, though - I want to avoid a heart attack ;-)

I am surprised with this review, I found the Western Cafe to be... disappointing. It's got "downtown diner" food with "uptown diner" prices. The service is lukewarm and the food is average. Highlights? They give you lots of sausage. That doesn't cut it for me, I'm more interested in quality than quantity. And the western doesn't have it.

One note: i wanted to do some laptop work in there and eat some food. They told me that I couldn't use their power outlets. I was... taken aback. How much can it possibly cost to let me plug my macbook in? Well, it cost them my business. I went down to the *extremely friendly* Sobe's breakfast restaurant (highly recommended!) where they don't mind if I plug in and work. I haven't been back to the Western since then.

For that particular meal (eggs and sausage), I thought the Western was a bit better. You're right that it's pretty expensive.

I have one more breakfast spot to hit (if it's still open) - the Stockyard. I ate there once several years ago (breakfast with a GF).

I've just about concluded that no simple egg & sausage/bacon meal in a restaurant is going to come close to matching what Mom made when I was growing up.

Most of us regular folks go to a cafe like the Western for food, not for ambience, and to escape yuppies like Zyhnn who are looking for the latest hidden treasure. That Zyhnn gets poor service only makes me like this place the more. Keep 'em out Western, we'll still support you! Another nice thing is that after you get a familiar face here, your portion sizes double. Ridiculous good food!

The Western has good standard fair and big portions with old-timers lining the bar early. The history of the Western is part of the appeal. This is one place in Bozeman that hasn't sold out. Highly recommended.

I travel a lot for work. Two years ago I picked up MT as a new territory. While I'm there, I always take breakfast at Western Cafe. This is a cool place. At first, I was a bit nervous because i't sa very "LOCAL" spot with ranchers and "cowboys" clearly being the ones who "Run the joint". I always feel a bit over dressed in my shirt/tie. My Brown skin doesn't help me blend in any either. lol! The cool thing is that everytime i'm in there, not only is the food AWESOME, but the service, respect and warmth are out of this world. I get a lot of "Looks" when I walk in, but the family who runs this establishment are the kindest, most hospitable family in the bussiness. I truly appreciate how i'm treated here and I LOVE the food. Each November, you'll find this Black Man chowing down at Western Cafe! I'll have to get a sweatshirt next time i'm there. The T-shirt is a big hit back here in SoCal!

...I also agree with Bopper. He's right...this is not the place to pull out your iPhone...or any MAC/BLACKBERRY/PDA accesspry and start working or communicating while dinning. Western is a "Down Home, good food, knock your boots at the door type of establishment. IT's a place to take in that which is known as BOZEMAN. IF you aint really down with BOZEMAN....you may feel a bit lost in here. THey deffinately hook up the food portions if you are a familiar face. MY second time there, I got way more bacon lol! I respect and dig the family who runs this place too. SHout out to Julie and her mom for being " ALL THAT & A BAG OF BOZEMAN JERKY!"

Homegrown radio station KGLT 91.9fm Bozeman thanks the Western Cafe for donating gift certificates for our fund drive this year! I stopped in this weekend for biscuits and gravy and my partner had the huevos rancheros. Both were exceptional. Keep up the good work!!

Loved the Western. It's the kind of place that you sip your coffee and read the paper, NOT the kind of place you open your laptop to do some work. Agree with Black and Bopper. Take the technology down a notch and enjoy a good hearty western breakfast.
